ACE: Analysis of Critical Elements for the Seismic Evaluation of Existing Multistory Residential Buildings
Pinkham, Clarkson W.; Hart, Gary C.
S.B. Barnes & Associates, Los Angeles, California; J.H. Wiggins Company, Redondo Beach, California, 1977,
The response of an existing building to earthquake motions reflects the performance level inherent in the codes, standards, and construction practices in existence at the time of the design and construction of the building. Deterioration and improper alteration during the service life of a building affect the actual margin of safety provided by the building. Thus there is a need to evaluate the potential seismic hazard of existing buildings. Following evaluation of the original structure, the effectiveness of appropriate strengthening or retrofit procedures may be determined. A methodology is presented in the user documentation for evaluating the need to upgrade existing buildings by identifying items requiring strengthening or repair, and then by verifying the adequacy of rehabilitation. This evaluation is given in terms of the behavior of the critical structural elements in a building. The determination of this behavior requires an analysis of the structural response of the building to prescribed forces. An analytical model of the building is defined with data collected from a field inspection of the building, original structural calculations and drawings, test records, and test of the existing building materials. The 1973 edition of the Uniform Building Code (UBC73) serves as the basis for calculations made with the analytical model. A building's description, plan dimensions, inertia and stiffness properties are input to the ACE program. UBC73 earthquake loads are calculated either by (1) the UBC73 building period formulas and basic shear distribution equation, or by (2) the building period and/or fundamental mode distribution of base shear obtained from the detailed analytical model. Member forces for user defined critical elements are calculated and used to find critcal stress ratios for these elements. Among the critical building elements the user can consider are steel, reinforced or unreinforced masonry, and reinforced or unreinforced concrete. ADAP: Static and Dynamic Analysis of Arch Dams
Clough, Ray W.; Raphael, Jerome M.; Mojtahedi, Soheil
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1973,
ADAP is a finite element program capable of performing linear static and dynamic analysis of arbitrary arch dam-foundation systems. Most of the logical features and many of the subroutines of the computer program SAP are utilized in this program. Special features primarily associated with preparation of input data are incorporated to make it more suitable for arch dam analysis. Three different element types are included in the program; these are considered to be the most suitable in this application. The program is organized in such as way that, if desired, new elements can be included easily. A finite element mesh is automatically generated from a minimum amount of input information. In each problem any one of the following types of analysis can be requested: (1) static analysis - the program is capable of handling an arbitrary combination of gravity, water pressure, and temperature loading conditions, and concentrated loads at any node; (2) evaluation of natural frequencies and mode shapes - if these are not available for input they are automatically evaluated as part of (3) or (4); (3) response history analysis - using a step-by-step integration scheme assuming the accelerations to vary linearly within each time step; and (4) response spectrum analysis - which results in estimated maximum values for displacements and stresses. Keywords: dam; eigenvalue analysis; legacy software; response spectrum analysis; static analysis; time history analysis

ADAP-88: Nonlinear Earthquake Analysis of Concrete Arch Dams
Mojtahedi, Soheil; Fenves, Gregory L.; Reimer, Richard B.
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1992,
The modeling and dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams, the impounded water and foundation rock, is an important step in the earthquake safety evaluation of such systems. A linear earthquake analysis assuming an arch dam is an elastic monolithic structure usually shows large tensile stresses that exceed the tensile strength of concrete. Because arch dams are constructed as cantilever monoliths, the joints between the monoliths cannot develop the tensile stress predicted in a linear analysis. In reality, the contraction joints are expected to open and close during an earthquake, releasing arch stresses and redistributing the internal forces. ADAP-88 is a finite element analysis program for computing the earthquake response of arch dams including the nonlinear effect of contraction joint opening. The nonlinear joint elements are combined with shell, solid and fluid finite elements to model a complete arch dam system. Special consideration is given to resolving the stress distribution near the joints by using a refined mesh of solid elements. A numerical procedure for solving the equations of motion assumes that the nonlinearity in the model is restricted to the joints. The cantilever monoliths between contraction joints are modeled as linear substructures, resulting in a significant reduction of computation in the iterative solution of the nonlinear equations of motion. ADAP-88 includes a finite element mesh generator for typical arch dam geometries. The computer program RESVOR is used to compute the added mass for the water impounded in the reservoir, assuming the fluid is incompressible. ANSR-1: Analysis of Nonlinear Structural Response
Mondkar, Digambar P.; Powell, Graham H.; Riahi, Ali; Row, Dennis G.; Maison, Bruce F.; Popov, Egor P.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1975,
ANSR is a general purpose computer program for static and dynamic analysis of nonlinear structures. In it, a structure is idealized as an assemblage of discrete finite elements. Each node may possess up to six degrees of freedom. The structure mass is assumed to be lumped at the nodes. Viscous damping effects may be included, or damping proportional to mass, specified. Static loads are applied in a series of load increments, each load increment being specified as a linear combination of static force patterns. This feature permits nonproportional loads to be applied. Dynamic loading may consist of earthquake ground accelerations, time-dependent nodal loads, or prescribed initial values of nodal velocities and accelerations. The elements available are: [1] A three-dimensional truss element, which may yield in tension and yield or buckle elastically in compression. Large displacement effects may be included. [2] A two-dimensional 4-to-8 node finite element for plane stress, plane strain, and axisymmetric analysis. Large displacements may be included and the material may be specified to be isotropic linearly elastic, orthotropic linearly elastic, or isotropic elastic-perfectly plastic with the Von Mises yield function. Nonlinearities are introduced at the element level only and may be due to large displacements, large strains, and/or nonlinear materials. [3] INEL2, beam-column element which has two-dimensional stiffness and yield characteristics, may be located arbitrarily in a three-dimensional structure and is intended primarily for modeling beams. [4] INEL3, a beam-column element which has three-dimensional stiffness and yield characteristics, can be used for modeling columns in which biaxial bending effects may be important and also for structures such as elevator shafts. In INEL2 and INEL3, allowance has been made for rigid floor diaphragms by means of a "slaving" feature incorporated into the elements at the element level because ANSR-1 cannot account for slaving at the nodal level. Both elements also allow for rigid end zones and for initial element actions. [5] The inelastic brace element, INEL4, is a simplified model to describe the macrobehavior of a brace (i.e., the axial force-displacement hysteretic rule). The axial force-displacement algorithm simulates the observed behavior with nine piecewise linear zones. The orientations of the zones are defined by: member properties, control displacements, forces, and slopes. All of these properties are user selected input to the algorithm. The code is organized to permit the addition of new finite elements to the library with relative ease. The program permits the user considerable flexibility in selecting a variety of solution schemes, including step-by-step, iterative, and mixed schemes. For static analysis, a different solution scheme may be employed for each load increment. The dynamic response is computed by stepwise time integration using Newmark's beta-gamma-delta operator. APOLLO: Analysis of Potential Liquefaction of Soil Layers for One-Dimensional Seepage
Martin, Philippe P.; Seed, H. Bolton
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1978,
This program incorporates a simplified procedure for one-dimensional analysis of generation and dissipation of pore water pressures in a sand deposit due to seismic excitation. The method of liquefaction analysis in APOLLO is outlined by the following steps: (1) By means of a dynamic response analysis of the soil deposit under investigation, time histories of shear stress developed by earthquake are determined at the various depths of interest; (2) For each depth in the soil profile, determine the equivalent uniform cyclic stress, the equivalent number of uniform stress cycles and the effective period of each stress cycle representing the induced stress history; (3) Determine from laboratory cyclic load test the relationships between the applied cyclic shear stresses and the number of stress cycles required to produce a condition of initial liquefaction under undrained conditions; (4) Determine the number of stress cycles required to cause initial liquefaction; (5) Determine rate of pore pressure build up for each elemental layer of the deposit; (6) From a knowledge of the coefficients of permeability and compressibility of the soil layers, determine the corresponding values of the coefficient of consolidation for the different layers; (7) Solve the governing differential equation for the known values of soil characteristics, pore pressure generation expressions and boundary conditions. Program APOLLO is used to solve this equation by an implicit finite difference method. Keywords: legacy software; liquefaction; seismic

ASHSD2: Dynamic Stress Analysis of Axisymmetric Structures Under Arbitrary Loading
Ghosh, Sukumar; Wilson, Edward L.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, Revised by: C.-J. Lin, United Engineers and Constructors, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1974., 1969,
ASHSD2 evaluates the time dependent displacements and stresses of complex axisymmetric structures subjected to any arbitrary static or dynamic loading or base acceleration. The three-dimensional axisymmetric continuum is represented either as an axisymmetric thin shell, or as a solid of revolution, or as a combination of both. The axisymmetric shell is discretized as a series of frustrums of cones and the solid of revolution as triangular or quadrilateral toroids connected at their nodal point circles. The program can solve five cases of loading: dead load, arbitrary static load, arbitrary dynamic load, horizontal and vertical component of earthquake acceleration record applied at the base of the finite element model. A separate version of the program for static analysis only (ASHSAB.FOR) contains in-core as well as out-of-core equation solvers. Keywords: dynamics; legacy software; static

ASKxELP: Assessment of Seismic RisK for ELectric Power Networks
Giannini, Renato; Pinto, Paolo E.; Vanzi, Ivo
1999,
ASKxELP is a Fortran computer program which models two different but interacting aspects of the seismic risk on a territory: first, the seismic behavior of an Electric Power Network (EPN), from both the structural and electric viewpoints and, secondly, the expected number of casualties in the municipalities. Interaction is intended in the sense that, electric power being essential for emergency operations (hospitals, telecommunications, emergency management centers, etc.), complete or partial blackout at a point in the affected area increases the time of response for rescue and hospitalization the injured. EPN's are extremely vulnerable lifelines since they contain a large number of pieces of equipment not designed to withstand lateral forces. This equipment is concentrated in the stations, or nodes of the network. Line malfunctions originating from any station may spread to significant parts of the system and cause a larger scale blackout. As a local damage indicator, the number of casualties is used; this computed as the product of the population and the percentage of casualties in the population modeled as a random function of the local earthquake intensity. The program allows: 1. a look at only the network, or only at the casualties within the territory, or at their interaction 2. performing either scenario studies, conditioning the results to seismic events of given magnitude and location, or full reliability studies, considering different sources of randomness (earthquake magnitude and location, attenuation, etc.) 3. analysis of large scale system behavior with synthetic indexes, or behavior at a small scale, with analytical indexes giving detailed territorial information. Synthetic indexes are useful from the network manager's viewpoint whereas analytical indexes are useful from the local community's perspective. Results are output either to a text file or a file post-processed with an external graphic program (PLOTxELP)to show the statistical results in the territory. Keywords: legacy software; seismic

BASSIN: Dynamic Analysis of Bridge/Abutment/Backfill Systems Subjected to Traveling Seismic Waves
Dendrou, Basile
Agbabian Associates, El Segundo, California, 1983,
The BASSIN methodology has the following features: It computes the three-dimensional dynamic response of an arbitrarily configured, elastic, bridge/abutment/backfill system. It assumes this system to be underlain by a soil continuum that is represented as an elastic half- space. It represents seismic input motions as being harmonic and induced by planar P-, SV-, SH-, or Rayleigh waves with arbitrary wavelength, amplitude, and direction of incidence. The methodology uses a substructure approach in which the structure (which comprises the bridge, abutment, and backfill) is represented using a three-dimensional finite element model, and the underlying soil continuum is represented using a boundary element approach. The finite element model defines the stiffness matrix, mass matrix, and fixed-base nodes for the structure. The boundary element approach characterizes the underlying soil medium using frequency- dependent impedance matrices and driving force vectors that also incorporate the free-field wave motions. Compatibility and equilibrium requirements at the soil/structure interface are used to couple these substructures. The steady-state response of the soil/structure system is then computed. BIAX-1: Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Sections
Wallace, John W.; Moehle, Jack P.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1992,
BIAX-1 is a general purpose computer program to evaluate uniaxial and biaxial strength and deformation characteristics of reinforced concrete (R/C) sections. The program computes these characteristics based on the assumption that plane sections remain plane after the application of loading. The program can be used to compute strength or moment-curvature relations for uniaxial or biaxial monotonic loading of reinforced concrete sections. Nonlinear material models are used for both the reinforcing steel and the concrete. The model for the stress-strain behavior of the reinforcing steel is versatile, allowing relations that closely approximate experimentally observed behavior. The program allows two stress-strain diagrams for concrete (unconfined and confined) and four relations for reinforcing steel. The R/C section is described as a combination of rectangular subsections; therefore the program allows easy generation of T, L, or barbell shaped sections. The program user specifies a mesh for each subsection. An iterative procedure (simple bisection algorithm) is used to obtain a solution for the prescribed problem. BLOCK: BASIC Programs for BLOCK Theory
Shi, Gen-hua; Goodman, Richard E.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1989,
Block theory has been applied to the planning and design of surface and underground excavations. The object of this technology is to specify the critical joint blocks intersecting an excavation. It applies to rock engineering for for excavations in hard rock where the movement of predefined blocks precipitate failure. A series of Block Theory programs help to find the critical key blocks and possibility of failure in all types of excavations. These were developed along with the theories outlined in the book, "Block Theory and Its Application to Rock Engineering," by Richard E. Goodman and Gen-hua Shi, Prentice-Hall, 1985. The problem is limited in scope--to find the critical blocks created by intersections of discontinuities in a rock mass excavated along defined surfaces. Yet the problem is sufficiently difficult that a series of simplifying assumptions are adopted: (1) All joint surfaces are assumed to be perfectly planar. (2) Joint surfaces will be assumed to extend entirely through the volume of interests, that is, no discontinuities will terminate within the region of a key block. The implications are that all blocks are completely defined by preexisting joint surfaces so that no new cracking is entailed in the analysis of block movements. (3) Blocks defined by the system of joint faces are assumed to be rigid. This means that block deformation and distortion will not be introduced. The key-block problem is formulated entirely through geometry and topology. (4) Discontinuities and the excavation surfaces are assumed to be determined as input parameters. Block theory is developed on the basis of geometric information derived from structural geology and equilibrium calculations using simple statics. It is assumed that continuum mechanics is second in importance to the calculation and description of key blocks. Only block movement modes are to be considered. The suite of programs included in the program package are: (1) General Key Blocks, (2) Stereographic Projections, (3) Stability Analysis, and (4) Tunnels and Shafts. BROKE: Dynamic Analysis of Electric Transmission Line Systems with Broken Wires
Fleming, John F.; Siddiqui, Faruq M. A.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, 1980,
This program may be used to perform static or dynamic analysis of an electric transmission line system when one or more wires suddenly break. In the static analysis the displacements, the wire tensions, and the forces at the wire attachment points and the ground line moments are computed for the broken wire equilibrium position for each support structure. In the dynamic analysis the variation with time of the same quantities are computed and the maximum values and their time of occurrence, along with corresponding impact factors, are given. The analysis is performed for a mathematical model of the line system consisting of the individual structural elements which are: the wires; the suspension insulators; and the support structures, which are usually called towers. The static analysis uses the Stiffness Method of analysis in which the displacements at discrete points in the mathematical model are computed by solving a set of equilibrium equations obtained by summing external applied loads and internal resisting forces at each of the points. For the dynamic analysis a numerical integration approach is used to solve the dynamic equations of motion for a lumped mass mathematical model. The user can choose between two different numerical integration procedures.

CAL-91: Computer Assisted Learning of Structural Analysis
Wilson, Edward L.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1991,
The basic purpose of the CAL language is to bridge the gap between traditional methods of teaching structural analysis and the use of automated structural analysis programs. As a result of using CAL-91, it is hoped that engineers will understand the theory and approximations which are used in modern structural analysis programs. CAL-91 is designed to interpret a sequence of commands which are supplied by the user. The commands can be given directly in an "interactive mode," or the program can read the commands from a "batch data file." The input has been redesigned so all commands, array names, and data are in free- field form. Commands for matrix analysis, direct stiffness structural analysis, and dynamic response analysis are possible. The program is written in standard FORTRAN 77 and will operate on small microcomputers or large mainframe computers. Printer plots of results can be produced. CAL-91 is used to perform linear dynamic analysis of small structural systems. It is possible to solve the following types of dynamic problems: 1. Evaluation of free-vibration mode shapes and frequencies. 2. Automatic generation of Ritz vectors to be used in mode superposition analysis or response spectra analysis. 3. Mode superposition analysis due to arbitrary loading. 4. Response spectra analysis due to earthquake loading. 5. Step- by-step analysis of structural systems with arbitrary viscous damping. Keywords: dynamics; eigenvalue analysis; response spectrum analysis; statics; time history analysis

CAL-80 (SD): Computer Analysis Language for the Static and Dynamic Analysis of Structural Systems
Wilson, Edward L.; Hoit, Marc Ira
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, Modified: F. Seible and C.T. Latham, Department of Applied Mechanics and Engineering Science, University of California, San Diego 1985., 1980,
CAL80 (SD) is an extensive modification of CAL78 which has options ranging from simple matrix manipulation, as an extension of classical structural analysis, to the direct stiffness formulation of structural systems with extensions to dynamic analysis in the time or frequency domain. An accompanying program, SIMPAL, contained within the CAL80 source code provides a transition to production-type programs for structural analysis by including options for data generation and geometry checks by screen plots. CAL80 operates as an interactive program but can also operate in batch mode by taking commands from an input file rather than a terminal. It is a database-driven program that is modularly constructed, with communication between each module controlled by a database manager. Small individual program segments, efficiently assembled by the use of run-time libraries and interconnected by a common database, allow applications not only on minicomputers and large mainframes, but also on microcomputer systems. CELL4: Elastic Finite Element Analysis of Prestressed Cellular Structures of Arbitrary Plan Geometry and Constant Depth
Chan, Esmond C.-Y.; Scordelis, Alex C.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1985,
CELL4 is a program based upon the finite element method and is particularly suited for the analysis of post-tensioned box girder bridges of constant depth which have arbitrary plan geometry and support conditions. The bridge can be straight, curved, or quadrilateral in plan. The longitudinal interior webs must be vertical, but the longitudinal exterior webs can be vertical, sloping, or curved. Transverse diaphragms can be modelled by vertical web elements or by special web elements in regions with sloping or curved webs. The top and bottom deck slabs as well as the interior and the exterior webs may be prestressed. Boundary conditions at any nodal point are arbitrary, allowing rigid supports as well as translational and rotational elastic supports, oriented in any arbitrary direction to simulate the stiffness of the supporting columns and bents. For prestressing analysis an automatic input has been provided to define the geometry of the two types of post-tensioned unbonded tendons which can be used. Each panel or slab tendon can be stressed either from one end or both ends, and losses due to friction and anchorage slip are accounted for. In order to facilitate the interpretation of output, an automatic integration of internal forces to give individual girder and total sectional force resultants is incorporated. This permits a better understanding of the load carrying mechanism in a complex bridge system, and can also be used to carry out equilibrium checks easily. Keywords: box girder bridge; bridge; concrete; prestressed concrete; reinforced concrete; tendon

ISADAB: Inelastic Static and Dynamic Analysis of Bridges
Saiidi, Mehdi; Lawver, Renee A.; Hart, James D.
Civil Engineering Department, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada, 1986,
ISADAB was developed for the transverse inelastic analysis of reinforced concrete highway bridges. The following tasks can be carried out by the program: (a) static analysis, (b) free-vibration analysis for initial displacements caused by static loads, (c) frequency analysis based on instantaneous stiffness during static loading, and (d) earthquake response analysis. The nonlinear effects are accounted for by incorporating translational and rotational springs at abutments, pier foundations, and at the base of piers. The deck and piers are treated as line elements. Two hysteresis models are used to represent the cyclic behavior of the nonlinear components: the Ramberg-Osgood model (for abutment springs) and the TQ-Hyst model (for pier and foundation springs), which operates on a tri-linear primary curve. LAPBOX: Linear Elastic Analysis of Box Girder Bridges
Choudhury, Deepak
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1986,
LAPBOX is an implementation of a numerical procedure for the analysis of curved nonprismatic reinforced and prestressed concrete box girder bridges. Thin-walled beam theory and the finite element method are combined to develop a curved nonprismatic thin-walled box beam element. The cross section of the element is a rectangular single-cell box with side cantilevers. The axis of the element is curved in plan. The cross sectional dimensions vary along the element axis. Eight displacement degrees of freedom, including transverse distortion and longitudinal warping of the cross section are considered at each of the three element nodes. Small displacements and small strains are assumed in the element formulation. Prestressing, consisting of post-tensioned bonded tendons in the longitudinal direction, is considered. The tendons are idealized as straight prestressing steel segments between nodes of the box beam elements. Friction and anchorage slip losses are considered. Pro/Bridge Geometry Pro/Bridge-Geometry is a versatile bridge modeling system that enables engineers to use the basic geometric parameters of road surface and bridge components to capture the complete 3-D geometry of a simple or very complex bridge site.
The system provides solutions to complex geometric problems that are difficult to do by hand, time consuming and tedious in nature. Such problems are often prone to errors that could lead to serious cost overrun and legal liability issues. It removes the geometric limitations in the design process and allows exploring better solutions to complex bridges.
Starting from the digital terrain data, basic alignment and road data, the user can dynamically manipulate the basic parameters that control the layout and proportioning of bridge elements. The effect of any parameter change is propagated into the complete 3-D model and instantly updates screen views as well as all tabular and graphic reports. The system accounts for the variety of bridge types and component shapes.
The system generates tabular reports such as screed elevation table and graphic reports as well as drawings such as abutment, piers, footing layout, girder layout, etc. Output can be viewed, printed and/or exported to packages such as AutoCad or Excel to finalize the generation of contract documents.
The system is not a bridge analysis or design program nor is it intended as a replacement of CAD packages such as AutoCAD. Keywords: bridge; FEA (finite element analysis); parametric capabilities

RC-PADD RC-PADD stands for "Reinforced Concrete - Post-Analysis Designer and Detailer". It is a special-purpose program for the structural design of reinforced concrete building structures and the subsequent detailing. The post-analysis nature of the program gives it more power over conventional "integrated" programs that carry out altogether the structural analysis and the structural design. RCAD Reinforcement is a solution that allows the fast and effective definition of reinforced concrete structures inside AutoCAD. The software has many "templates" that comply with the detailing practices of different countries around the world, to ensure that local detailing methods can be used and the appropriate bar schedules produced automatically. Several macros exist for the fast and efficient detailing and scheduling of "standard" structures, such as pad footings, staircases, beams and columns. As with RCAD Steel, the software benefits from complete integration with the world renowned analysis and design software ROBOT Millennium - thereby producing automatic drawings of reinforced concrete members that have previously defined in ROBOT Millennium. RCAD Steel RCAD is a new leading edge solution for the modeling and drafting of steel and concrete structures. RCAD can be used in a variety of situations and, built upon the philosophy of integrated solutions, allows the user to benefit from a truly seamless integration of drafting, analysis and design. RCAD software is a solution completely integrated with Autodesk products and may be used with both AutoCAD and Architectural Desktop. As with all RCAD products, the complete range of AutoCAD/ADT commands are available at any time.
RCAD Steel allows users to easily define steel structures inside AutoCAD/ADT. The software has a full library of steel sections from around the world and also has various "macros" built in as standard to facilitate the simple generations of standard details, such as connections, staircases and handrails. Facilities also exist to produce simple general arrangement details or even more detailed shop drawings. However, arguably the strongest part of the solution is the ability of RCAD Steel to integrate with ROBOT Millennium analysis and design software, thereby providing a single solution for drawing, analysis, design and final detailing. A typical practical example of this could be that the draftsman would set up a drawing in RCAD Steel, the engineer would then work on the integrated ROBOT file and maybe make some changes to the section sizes used and then the draftsman would benefit from a "seamless" update of the drawing file that could then be taken further to produce final drawings.
The benefits, both in terms of time saved and also accuracy, are obvious. Keywords: integrated software; steel; steel detailing

SEGAN: Analysis of Curved Segmentally Erected Prestressed Concrete Box Girder Bridges
Van Zyl, Stefanus F.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1978,
This program permits the analysis of curved segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges, including time dependent effects, so that deflections and stresses can be computed at any stage during the construction or service life of the bridge. The segments can be either precast or cast in place. The bridge cross section must consist of a single box section with vertical or inclined webs and have cantilever flanges. Width and depth dimensions can vary along the bridge span. Time-dependent material changes, such as creep and shrinkage of concrete, as well as environmental effects such as humidity and temperature changes, are accounted for. However, other concrete material nonlinearities such as cracking or inelastic behavior and geometric nonlinearities are not included in the analysis. Prestressing in the longitudinal direction can be included in the analysis. Tendons can be located in either the webs or flanges and can have a linear or parabolic profile. Stressing and release operations, slip in of tendons, and restressing and removal of tendons are included. A procedure is included for specifying the structural configuration and the erection sequence. Operations used in segmental construction, such as addition of segments, prestressing, changing of support boundary conditions, application or removal of construction loads, and prescribed displacements can be analysed. At each construction stage, the current structure is analyzed and the incremental and total displacements, stresses, and strains are obtained. The complete structure can also be analyzed for a variety of live loads and time steps. Keywords: concrete; creep; segmental bridge; shrinkage

SHLAG: Shear Lag Analysis of Simple and Continuous T, I, and Box Beams
Song, Qi-Gen
Department of Civil Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, China, 1990,
Stress distribution in wide beam flanges and the related problems of effective width or stress ratio have been studied experimentally and theoretically by harmonic analysis and by finite element analysis. Based upon some rational assumptions for the behavior of the web of the beam, a simplified shear lag analysis for the stresses in the flanges, which is convenient for a wide range of problems is implemented in SHLAG. The report discusses the convergence of the solution for peak stresses, and an improved technique is developed. Theoretically, due to the shear lag effect, the longitudinal distribution of the bending moment in a continuous beam with wide flanges is differenct from that for a prismatic beam analysed by elementary beam theory. A general procedure for determining the stress resultants in a continuous beam considering the shear lag effect is also presented. The program requires only a minimum amount of input data for the calculation of the stress distribution and the stress ratios in the flanges of these beams for a variety of loading cases. Keywords: shear lag

Soft Burn SoftBurn is a CNC Plate Burner Software that Scans virtually any Connection Material sheet or P sheet of plates detailed for fabrication. Soft Burn will scan (read) these drawings of plates, and create full scale DXF or DSTV files for the CNC plate burner. These DXF and DSTV files can then be read in by the CNC plate burning software completely eliminating the need to program the plates manually in the shop.
Input: Autocad Drawings - Soft Burn will read virtually any DWG or DXF file, typically created by Autocad or other software packages as input. The Connection Material drawing, or P sheet, can consist from one to any number of plates, but should just be connection material, not a full shop drawing of a Column or Beam. The plates on these drawings have to be drawn to some scale (example, 1 inch scale), and each plate can be drawn to a different scale if needed.
Output: DXF output Files - The DXF output file generated by SoftBurn will be the full scale drawing of the plate, with all inside corners radiused. The layer used for the plate outline is user defined, typically PLASMA or CUT. The holes will be drawn in layer PUNCH1, PUNCH2, or PUNCH3, as each of these layers define a hole or tool diameter, and are user defined. These DXF files will be easily read into the software used on your CNC plate burner.
The DSTV output file generated by SoftBurn are the industry standard DSTV file, and includes all the properties required in the DSTV file including the plate grade, quantity, properties, etc. All inside corners will be radiused, and the plate profile and holes will be accurately reported as well. These DSTV files will be easily read into and software requiring DSTV files. Keywords: CNC; steel

On the basis of a given time-acceleration record, the program numerically integrates the normal convolution time integral for various natural periods and desired damping ratios. Relative displacements, relative and pseudo-relative velocities, absolute and pseudo-absolute accelerations are computed for natural periods from .01 seconds to 100 seconds. The program provides tables of displacement, velocity, and acceleration values with three measures of spectral intensity. A printer plot of desired damping ratios of the pseudo-relative velocity vs. natural period is presented on a 2 inch by 2 inch log-log grid. Keywords: response spectrum; seismic
